Relive the magic of Mohammad Rafi’s music with India’s iconic singer, Sonu Niigaam and one of the world’s leading orchestras, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Celebrating the Legend of Mohammad Rafi: a tribute to Bollywood’s greatest playback singer, performed by Sonu Niigaam and the world famous City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra.

In celebration of Mohammad Rafi, the mesmerising voice that became the sound of Bollywood’s golden era of the 50’s, 60’s and 70’s; the internationally renowned City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra is teaming up with charismatic singer Sonu Niigaam, the voice of Indian cinema today – a legend in his own right – to perform 18 of the greatest Rafi songs of all time that have been specially arranged for the occasion for the 75 piece symphony orchestra. The tour in July 2008 will feature three of the UK’s most exclusive live performance venues; the acoustically perfect Symphony Hall Birmingham, Manchester’s legendary rock venue the Apollo Theatre, and the architecturally stunning London Coliseum, home of the English National Opera and London’s biggest stage.

Mohammad Rafi – The Singer, The Legend

Mohammad Rafi (1931-80) for all the singing legends in the world Mohammed Rafi has laid claim to being one of the greatest. When he died at the age of 55 he had recorded an estimated 26,000 songs, making him in his era the undisputed playback singer for the Indian film industry. From Bangalore to Birmingham, he remains to this day in the conscious of millions of South Asian music lovers, for whom he was, and still is, the man with the golden voice.

Sonu Nigam – The performer

Over the years, Sonu Niigaam has become a major force in the Indian music industry, often referred to as India’s best playback singer and the Golden Voice of Indipop. Sonu Niigaam’s continuing illustrious musical career includes milestone playback recordings in a wide range of Hindi films such as “Taal’, “Bunty aur Babli’, “Dil Chahta Hai’, “Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham’, “Kal Ho Na Ho’, “Main Hoon Na’, “Kabhie Alvida Na Kehna’, and “Om Shanti Om’. Sonu is recognised for his versatile voice as well as an excellent emotion range. Aside from singing in Hindi, he has also recorded in Kannada, Punjabi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and Marathi. Sonu has also performed at the prestigious Harvad Univerisity, the first South Asian invited to perform at a Harvard ceremony, where his rendition of Gandhiji’s favourite Bhajan “Vaishnava Jana To” was widely appreciated.

Yeh Shaam Mastani is a reality musical show featuring 7 fabulous singers weaving ‘saat suro ka magic’. The show is hosted by the effervescent Mini Mathur, who is popularily known for her work as a great host in Indian Idol television series. The show aired on the weekends on Sony TV which started around May 3, 2008.

The show had the country’s seven top singers who will regale audiences by singing their all-time favories. Each episode will showcase the musical prowess of one artist who will perform live for the studio audience. These singers will take the stage to perform some of their greatest (solo or duet) hits and get up-close and personal with the viewers. Besides that the singers will also take requests for songs from their fans.

Vivel Presents Yeh Shaam Mastani is a weekend musical journey with 7 fantastic singers weaving, “Saat Suro ka magic” and making it one great show to spend your weekends with. Each episode will showcase the musical prowess of one artist who will perform live for the studio audience. It’s a pure musical delight.
